Property Rewires
Did you know that the wiring in your house doesn't last forever? Over time, all electrical wiring can become degraded, which signals that a property rewire is needed. Sometimes the safest thing to do is to replace your entire electrical system in this instance, something that we would always discuss with you so you're aware of what this entails and whether it's definitely needed for your property.

Below are some of the common questions we get asked about property rewires.

How do I know if my property needs rewiring?
If you have an older house which is 25-30 years old or older, and you haven't
Here are some of the signs you can look out for which shows that your house needs rewiring imminently:
-
A persistent burning smell which hasn't come from burning your toast!
-
Scorched or discoloured sockets or switches
-
Fuses blowing repeatedly
-
Flickering or dimming lights
-
Electric shocks

How often does a property need rewiring?
According to the Homebuilding & Renovating Advice Centre, rewiring a house is necessary if it hasn't been rewired within the last 25-30 years. If you know that your house hasn't had a rewire within this time frame, chances are it will need upgrading at least in part in order to bring it up to current safety standards.

Can I live in my house whilst it's being rewired?
To rewire a property furniture will need to be moved, carpets and floorboards lifted, and old wiring removed from walls, which may include removing of plaster. It is possible to live in your house whilst its being rewired, however some flexibility around accessible rooms would need to be planned out. This is why it's essential to choose an electrician that will work with you to ensure the job is done with the least impact to your daily life.

When doing a property rewire, it is worth considering that whilst the floor boards are up and there are holes in the walls, what additional installations you may like to future proof your property e.g. media cables and Smart Home Technology. Even if you won't be using this now, having the infrastructure in place can save you time and money later on, plus increase the value of your property.
